Computers are essential gadgets in modern building automation.

Bring your social media with you to the supermarket or to the mall. Mobile social media could be used to get connected with people near to you in a town. I've plenty of Twitter, Facebook, Qaiku, Flickr, Ning and Friendfeed friends I've never seen in real life. What about using social media as a way to connect with them IRL?

The Future Store don't need to operate with in four walls anymore. Paul Swansen said early on when we started the FSC Basecamp that the store and supermarket hasn't changed in fifty years.

In other discussions we've also discussed the possibility of using signage in combination with mobile phones and let clients and sale clerks communicate product information, brand information, technical advice, or lifestyle messages to outlets in different locations in the country or globally.

The showroom becomes a newsroom that broadcasts the sales talk to a much larger audience.

How Dynamic is Store Design?

We've new technology but so far the cash register has been changed from mechanical to electronic points of sales. The barcode reader makes it easier to "type" the price and product code into the cash register. Computers have made inventory management easier.

But what has happened to the sales process? Self services has been around for a long time.

There is some talk about sales automation, but the vending machine is over one hundred years old technology.

When do we learn to use modern computer technology, internet streaming, social media, and open collaboration? Will it happen 2200?

Sales automation and vending machines

According to wikipedia, In some countries, merchants may sell alcoholic beverages such as beer through vending machines, while other countries do not allow this practice (usually because of dram shop laws). The first modern coin-operated vending machines were introduced in London, England in the early 1880s, dispensing post cards. The first vending machine in the U.S. was built in

1888 by the Thomas Adams Gum Company, selling gum on train platforms. The idea of adding simple games to these machines as a further incentive to buy came in 1897 when the Pulver Manufacturing Company added small figures which would move around whenever somebody bought some gum from their machines.

This simple idea spawned a whole new type of mechanical device known as the "trade stimulators". The birth of slot machines and pinball is ultimately rooted in these early devices.

Interactive Sales Communication

How about the sales and decision process. Sales people still talk to single clients in a store. New technology would easily let them make product presentations to hundreds or even thousands at the same time. All this could happen in the traditional shop environment.

We've the theater of show-room for expanded, dynamic, and interactive digital selling available but nobody really uses the technology to build extended customer bases.

Sales people still demonstrate a computer or car to an individual or at most to a couple or a family. They could easily start to use their demo-park for extended product presentations and take them to other real-life application areas in the store.

The same goes for thousands of other products. We could change the store to an effective newsroom with continuous interactive broadcasting reaching out to clients that haven't stepped inside the store.

Extended shopping environment

Traditional advertising can be replaced by digital storytelling. Customers could be a part of the communication process and at least the FAQ dialog.

The Future Store and Showroom can be transformed to a communication center where a part of the branding is done by the clients. Why no extend the customer relationship to the entire product life span? Customer service operations could also be opened to show how complaints are handled or happy clients are continuing to use a product or service.

PS: I try to write a radically new script for what could happen in the Future Store and Showroom. Trade Stimulators and Community Managers might have an ever increasing role if we understand how to implement these activities to the traditional store.

Tervetuloa Seuloon: 12.02.2008, 12:42

Seulo-palvelun testivaihe on käynnistynyt Espoon lähiöissä marraskuussa 2007. Tämän vuoden aikana testikäyttöä laajennetaan muualle pääkaupunkiseudulle. Maaseudulla Seulo-palvelun testikäyttöä on suunniteltu käynnistettäväksi aluksi Keski-Pohjanmaalla.

Seulo-palvelun taustalla on Seulo-hanke, jonka mahdollistajina on joukko yrityksiä ja kuntia. Hankkeen tavoitteena on kehittää uusi ja mahdollisimman asiakaskeskeinen palvelumalli Seulo, jota kuvastaa luonnehdinta kodin logistinen avustaja ja kaupan ja muiden palveluiden neutraali kumppani.

Seulo palvelee

* Kotitalouksille Seulo-palvelu on kevyt ja vaivaton tapa hoitaa arjen rutiinit. Aikaa vapautuu yhdessäoloon ja itselle tärkeisiin asioihin
* Kaupan yrityksille Seulo tarjoaa mahdollisuuden palvella asiakasta entistäkin monipuolisemmin
* Seulo-palvelun testikäytön tutkimuksellinen seuranta tarjoaa tietoa nettikaupan vaikutuksista teollisuuden toimitusprosesseihin
* Yhteisöllinen Seulo yhdistää palveluita ja vastaa alueen eri tahojen kuljetustarpeisiin

Tule mukaan Seulo-hankkeeseen! Ota yhteyttä Seulo-ryhmään tämän linkin kautta.

Ollille ja Jannelle tiedoksi tämä juttu etätunnisteista. Olemme tutkineet tätä aihetta vuodesta 2005 lähtien ja etätunnisteet ovat tärkeitä elementtejtä Future Store Conceptissä.
