Kaukaiset agraarijuuret ovat selkeästi nähtävissä perheemme elämässä. Jordanialaiselta ostomyyntikauppiaalta hankkimani, pieni arkkupakastin alkaa jo olla täynnä mustikoita, puolukoita ja mitä moninaisimpia sieniä, joiden keruussa vaimoni on mesta...
I will soon visit a big pulp & paper conference by PIRA in Barcelona, Spain (14.-15.10.2009; welcome!) and have an oral presentation about the paper industry applications of PMEU "mini-fermentor".
What was interesting in this conference is the la...
Olen kuljeskellut kuluvan kesän aikana pitkin maatamme ja kohdannut paljon aitoa, vilpitöntä junttiutta.
Junttius löytyy monesta ihmisestä pintarakenteen (henkinen epidermis) alta. Olipa ammatina nimismies, putkimies, lakimies tai mikä hyvänsä mi...
Sulphate Reducing Bacteria in paper industry.
SRB is an interesting group of bacteria which can use sulphate as an electron acceptor for the respiration. Despite the chances of certain other bacteria to use sulphate as the sulphur source for their...
Thank you, Helge, for your comment!
PMEU (Portable Microbiological Enrichment Unit) is a multi-purpose, small-scale fermentor for all areas of microbiology. Basic idea of PMEU is to give analytical results with speed (in hours, compared with days...

Environmental and paper industry microbiologist since late 70's. Working today (after 20 years for a big international paper company) as free-lancer. Special interest: to develop rapid analytical methods for paper industry microbiology (see "industrymicrobiologist.blogspot.com").
Hobbies: music, arts (travellingwitheyes.blogspot.com) and staying all lazy in our summer cottage, watching sunsets over the lake.
Biodegradation sounds interesting. Genomic tools are something which I have not used personally - but I know the basics of 16SrRNA and PCR methods. Stora Enso (which I worked for 1986-2006) ordered those analyses from Viikki, VTT/Espoo or KCL, and I had chances to visit all those labs.
Effects of biocides on paper industry bacteria is a most important topic for me today. What kind of biocides, what kind of dosing etc. are often asked from me. Biofilms and spore-forming bacteria have been the subjects of my research already over 20 years. I have also worked with coliforms (esp. with Klebsiella pneumoniae) on 1970's-1980's.
Leena Suominen / Viikki (do you know Leena?) helped me to detect plasmids of K.pneumoniae, and I started my Dr.thesis work with it - but had to leave it when I started working for Enso-Gutzeit Oy in Imatra. It is still one of my "favourite" bacteria, no matter its pathogenic features.
Are you a member of Mikrobiologikilta? If so, we maybe meet in Autumn meeting?
I graduated from Viikki about a year ago, been working as a research scientist at VTT in a project concerning microbial ecology in the deep biospheres. My contract ends in a month, after which I will start my phD project at SYKE. The project is just starting, it's on biodegradation of herbicides in ground water using genomic tools... should be interesting!
I read your article in Inocula, you're working with paper machine microbes, right? That should be interesting. I will visit your blog later on to look more closely in the subject.
Hi Juha!
Your German is pretty good. Gut gesprochen, schön geschrieben. :) Yes, I visited your blog. I guess you are working in the paper industry. Right now, I'm still caught in a lot of offline activities and can't spend as much time in the various communities as I would wish too. However this will change in the coming weeks hopefully and then I'll be able to invest also more time here on kk.
Have a nice weekend. We'll sure meet again :)
Wilbau
Thank you for reaching out via this site. I am currently involved in various activities - feel free to see my linkedin profile - www.linkedin.com/in/susankangnam - if you have a profile, I would be happy to request for add via LinkedIn.
Hi Juha,
I just wonder, but assume you did get my comments to you yesterday (I do not see it here...). It sounds nice, if you call me on the 9th of September, which is exact time for a cup of coffee. My number is 040 585 2872
Hello Juha!
I am so sorry that answering to you took so long time... I have had huge problems between my email and kk-net. I have not had any note, when I get comments, and still have. I send a message to our it-support, but have not had any answer yet...
So, a coffee meeting 9th September before 15.10 sounds nice.
Hello Sari! In addition to my previous post: my daughter Päivi lives in Imatra. She has first studied in "Porvoon matkailuopisto", and after graduated, continued studies of health care. She is working today as a nurse in Imatra.
