Received an email today that catches my attention. First, it was in my SPAM-box and I almost deleted it automatically, but I’m glad I got in touch with this market report and Mr.Tuovinen’s blog.

Ms. Hsuan-Chu Lee, I think this market report surveying the Southeast Asian media prepared by Timoteus ”Tim” Tuovinen’s during his stay in the area from November 2011 to February 2012 gives a good insight into our work in the fields of Medical Technology, Environmental Process Solutions, Bioenergy, Measurements and Process Control.  Our job will focus on different industries and business segments and we might concentrate more on Taiwan and China, but Digital Media’s approach and presentation gives a good model about how to present the opportunities and possibilities.

While based in Bangkok, Thailand, the fact finding trips took Mr. Tuovinen to Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. Digital Media Finland’s report takes a look at the audiovisual media sector of Southeast Asia and it focuses mainly on the television and film business in Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia. These territories were chosen because of their diversity and as one differs from another, as a whole they illustrate the stage of market development.

In Asia it really doesn't matter what you know but who you know. Most business interactions are based on personal relationships and mutual trust, which is a time consuming status to achieve.

Mr. Tuovinen’s market report is based on personal interviews, research work and observation of consumer habits and trends. It is intended for readers with previous knowledge of media industry structures and a desire to learn more about one of the most interesting emerging markets in the world.

- The scope of the report doesn't allow for in-depth analysis or detailed market descriptions. The approach is not an academic one, but rather seeks to be an informative, easy to read publication which will open up new leads for the reader to elaborate on specific topics later, writes Mr. Tuovinen.

- As source material, I have used several industry publications such as Content Asia, Screen World News, Channel 21, Prensario International, as well as local sources, such as Bangkok Post, Strait Times and The Nation. The information is applied within the text in a way that footnotes are not used. At the end of the report there is a country by country list of relevant companies.

- During my trip I kept a blog, which reflects some of my personal impressions of everyday life in the region. The blog can be accessed at: I hope that this report will help the reader to gain a better understanding of the Southeast Asian media industry; its structure and workings. I welcome reader feedback and offer to provide more in-depth information on specific topics where needed.
