FOREWORD | The Drinking Water Health Advisory Program, sponsored by the Health and Ecological Criteria Division of the Office of Science and Technology (OST), Office of Water (OW),
provides information on the health and organoleptic (color, taste, odor, etc.) effects of contaminants in drinking water. This Drinking Water Health Advisory contains Health
Advisories as well as aesthetic properties (e.g., taste, odor, color) of manganese in drinking
water.
Although manganese is an essential nutrient at low doses, chronic exposure to high doses
may be harmful. The health effects from over-exposure of manganese are dependent on the
route of exposure, the chemical form, the age at exposure, and an individual’s nutritional status.
Regardless, the nervous system has been determined to be the primary target organ with
neurological effects generally observed. Many of the reports of adverse effects from manganese exposures in humans are from inhalation exposures in occupational settings.
Helge: We discuss the Drinking Water Health Advisory for Manganese in Facebook and related to the high Manganese contents in the lakes close to the Talvivaara mine in Sotkamo.
A Drinking Water Health Advisory is not an enforceable standard for action. This Health Advisory describes nonregulatory concentrations of the contaminant in water that are expected to
be without adverse effects on both health and aesthetics. Health Advisories serve as technical
guidance to assist Federal, State, and local officials responsible for protecting public health when
emergency spills or contamination situations occur.
They are not to be construed as legally enforceable Federal standards. They are subject to change as new information becomes available. This draft supersedes any previous draft advisories for this chemical.

CEC looks forward to welcoming new member Mauri Ahlberg, a professor whose R&D team of Eija and Jouko Lehmuskallio created a fast and free online service for species identification. Designed for Finland, the idea can be replicated anywhere.
Welcome to NatureGate
New CEC member Mauri Ahlberg is a professor of biology and sustainability education at the University of Helsinki. He heads a research and development team that created a free online service for fast and easy species identification, as described on its website:
Mauri invites viewers to consider such a resource for their own work: "Please check it yourself and think about huge options of applying NatureGate agenda around the World, to all regions and countries. These kinds of services promote sustainable use of biodiversity," he says.
The invention is based on a method and a system, wherein objects can be identified on the basis of location and one or more characteristics by means of a user device and a service product. The service product provides a service, with which objects can be identified. In the method, the object to be identified is positioned, the user device is connected to said service and the service fetches information on the basis of the position of the object and its characteristic(s) from a database. The fetched information is presented for the user device in the form of one or more alternatives. The invention is mainly characterized in that the user device presents the characteristic(s) of the object to be identified by sending a picture of the object to be identified to the service product, in which picture the service product reads the characteristics of the object on the basis of which the search from the database takes place.
I have a dream. There are millions of things / processes that can be done or managed with advanced intelligent multipoint measuring devices. We need more:
