Suomenlinna Fortress

This is a most recommended site in Helsinki to visit! It is my favourite place. Living in Helsinki from 70's to 80's, I visited it all year long. The ferry trip does not take too much time (and is cheap, too), and you are away from buzy Helsinki centre. - This picture was drawn by me some years ago when I had a free evening during my business trip. The church, old houses, peaceful landscape in the middle of the fortress island - my mind was resting there.

  • Thank you, J.Vahe, for additional information about Suomenlinna Fortress! There are sites on the island where I have taken photos since I first visited it in the beginning of 60's.

  • Suomenlinna fortress or Viapori fortress (as it is also called) is a great place to visit and a great place to live, I have heard. Decades ago as a young student I studied the place well. I believe that the tourism information should tell more about Suomenlinna fortress. When it was built in the 18th century it differed from fortresses of 18th century because bastions etc. were situated in the nature following the shape of islands. Vauban´s system of fortification is very different http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vauban
  • Wow, that's great. When we talked about publishing PMEU and biotouch articles, we've to use own design and graphics. The same goes for blogs and visualizing comments in the Ning.
  • Thank you, Helge, for your comment!

This drawing hobby started in the middle of 90's, during business trips to Helsinki, den Haag, London, Yorkshire...nothing important to do on afternoons. Then I noticed that it is the best way to stop all confusing thinking! Just concentrate on drawing. This Suomenlinna picture took est. 2 hours and resting was complete during that session. I recommend!
  • Juha, I like your graphics. You are a scientist-artist.
