Chardham is the union of four abodes. It has its historical background which is however not known to everyone. It is a sacred belief of Hindus that Lord Vishnu appeared at four spots namely Jagannath Puri, Rameshwaram, Dwarka and Badrinath in four directions. The religious reformer, Shankaryacharya, emerged with the names of primary holy places of Chardham - Badrinath, Kedarnath, Dwarka and Jagannath Puri. Hindus believe that due to extreme mystical power of this great saint, the four places took a square shape.

Thereafter, the abode of Adi Shankaryacharya in Garhwal Himalayas got popularized by the name Himalayan Chardham. It is a network of four holy destinations in Uttrakhand - Gangotri, Yamunotri, Badrinath and Kedarnath.
