Biotechnology offers a wide range of tools to the bioenergy industry. Through them, new energy production technologies can be created, for the efficient utilization of biomass and energy crops.
These energy production technologies could include:
- Biological optimization of bioethanol production
- Biological production of hydrogen
- Development of energy crops with advanced properties
Energy production from biomass coming from several sources is already a reality in Spain. Private companies, as well as the government and technological centers, are strongly pushing for bioenergy future development.

A wide range of agricultural residues (e.g. corn stover, straw, etc) can be used for production of second generation biofuels. Such biofuels are generally considered sustainable as they use waste materials from food crop production, and do not compete with food crops for land.
The European Biofuels Technology Platform actively engages with biofuels stakeholders (researchers, academia, civil societies, industry), EC-funded research projects and initiatives, related European TPs and global biofuels organsiations in a wide range of activites relevant to the R&D&D of sustainable advanced biofuels in Europe:
