University of Lugano (the official name - Università della Svizzera italiana, USI) is a university with teaching in several languages, largely focused on foreign students. Representatives from more than 100 countries are studying and working in the university. USI was also one of the first universities in Switzerland, that moved to the new European system of higher education ("Bologna system" or "3 + 2"), which allowed students to participate in academic mobility across Europe. Teaching at the University is mainly in Italian and English. USI also traditionally implements the latest effective teaching methods in their work. For example, the system of teaching in two languages develops its international activities. The University also considers as a part of its mission - to serve as a mediator between Italy and the rest of Switzerland.

History

University of Lugano was founded in 1996 year, but plans for its establishment were a few decades before. The first proposal to open a similar institution of higher education emerged in the 19th century, in response to requests from residents of Switzerland. In 1803 Italian-speaking region of Ticino has received the status of the Swiss Confederation. However, the process of creating the university demanded greater demographic and financial resources.

Campuses

The University of Lugano has two campuses. One is in Lugano, where there are Faculties of Economics, Communication and Informatics theory. The other one is in Mendrisio (15 km south of Lugano in the direction of the border with Italy), which includes the Academy of Architecture.

Campuses in both cities include old neoclassical buildings that are specially equipped for lectures, seminars and research. In recent years, campuses have also received new buildings and infrastructure that are given to students, teachers and researchers. They have more space to work and provide the University with the latest technology. They regularly update and improve the campus. They meet the needs of most students.

Auditorium for lectures, seminars, workshops and computer labs are open to students around the clock. A library is equipped with the latest search and storage of books.
