Ostrobotnia is an entrepreneurial strong-hold

10968921294?profile=originalOstrobothnia, or the Coastline from Kristinestad in the south to Kokkola in the north, covers an area of about 10,000 sq. km.

About 200,000 people live on the Coastline, of which 51 % are Finnish-speaking and 48 % Swedish-speakers.

The area has a strong tradition of entrepreneurship and the largest number of companies per capita on the mainland of Finland.

The export share of approximately 70 % is exceptionally high. Another indicator of the area's strong economy is that the unemployment rate is the lowest in the country.

KK-Net is studying the potential of this region. We participated at the Kokkola Material Week 23. - 26.9.2014 and are now wrapping together old and present findings and experiences. We've been working several companies from this region for more than three decades.

Kokkola Industrial Park

Kokkola Industrial Park is an inorganic production site in Scandinavia. Well developed logistical connections, synergy and positive atmosphere for industry have attracted chemical industry to locate in Kokkola.

10968928062?profile=originalAs strongly developing site, new space for industrial activities has been created, and tight network of connections, infrastructure (pipelines, railways, roads..) and services easy establishing and maintaining the chemical production at the site.

The Kokkola Industrial Park is the largest manufacturing site of inorganic chemicals in the Nordic region.

Boliden's zinc plant in Kokkola is one of the largest in the world. Boliden has taken over the zinc production from Outokumpu. Freeport Cobalt runs the cobalt refinery.

The Finnish Kemira sold its fertilizer production operations in Kokkola to the Norwegian Yara, which focuses on fodder phosphate production.
The KIP Association was founded to oversee the rapid transition that the site was going through after Kemira and Outokumpu moved out from the area.

Today, the Port of Kokkola is integrated in the industrial park, even though only a third of goods shipped through the port originate from the factories in the area. One third consists of transit traffic from Russia, while the rest comprises container traffic and general cargo.

Even though all industrial operations have been acquired by multinational companies, not a single one has been closed down; instead the new owners have made large investments.

The companies in the area annually invest around 50 million Euros in modernizations. Furthermore, a combined investment of more than 100 million Euros in new production has been made by a number of companies.

10968928288?profile=originalThe port and its connection to the rail network is KIP's main success factor. We've the same rail gauge in Finland with Russia and China.

Kokkola Material Week 23.9. - 26.9.2014

10968927272?profile=originalKK-Net participated at the Kokkola Material Week at the West Coast of Finland. Bioeconomy, Cleantech, and Digitalization were discussed.

Why did we go? KIP - the Kokkola Industrial Park - is the largest manufacturing site of inorganic chemicals in the Nordic region. Impressive, sure, we wanted to find out more about Kokkola, its research and development, scientific goals, future plans, and analyze present problems and opportunities.

The companies in the area do annually invest 50 million € in modernizations. Furthermore, a combined investment of more than 100 million € in new production facilities by a number of companies at the KIP area have been made.

THE KOKKOLA MATERIAL WEEK

The KMW material chemistry event was held for the second time. Experts from ten countries with scientific, industrial and administrative backgrounds got together to learn, discuss, and network about material science, metals, nanotechnology, biomass, recylcling, industrial symbiosis, lithium and natural products.

During the 2'nd Material Week more than 50 experts were covering a rich assortment of themes:

  1. biorefining
  2. nanotechnology
  3. sustainability
  4. leather
  5. metals
  6. industrial symbiosis (networking and collaboration)
  7. new technologies linked with business development

The session topics were dealing with futuristic point of views, catalysis, process intensification, biomass utilization, coating, REACH, LCA, industrial side streams, oil recovery and burgeoning lithium supplies from the region.

HISTORY AND PRESENT

Kemira and Outokumpu were strong players in Kokkola since the 1960s.There has been changes in the ownerships of the companies and new opportunities are looming around the next corner.

The Port of Kokkola is integrated to the industrial park, even though only a third of the goods shipped from the port originate from the factories in the area. One third consists of the transit traffic from Russia, while the rest comprises container traffic and general cargo.

The area boasts Finland's only all-weather therminal (AWT) where fright can be discharged and loaded under roof. One of the Port's main competitive advantages stems from good rail connections, combined with the fact that rail gauge in Finland is the same as in Russia and China.

The port and its connections to the rail network is KIP's main success factor. The access to qualified professionals in the region as well as investments in security and environment has also contributed to Kokkola's good reputation as a site for chemical production.

The present owners and big players at the Kokkola Industrial Park are:

  1. Boliden: zinc, sulphuric acid (Boliden's zinc plant is one of the largest in the world)
  2. Feeport Cobalt: cobalt
  3. Yara: feed phosphates, potassium sulphate
  4. Woikoski: oxygen, nitrogen and argon gas, carbon dioxide
  5. Air Liquid: oxygen, carbon dioxide
  6. Tetra: calcium chloride
  7. Nordkalk: lime
  8. CABB: organic fine chemicals
  9. Kokkola Power: electricity, heat, steam
  10. Kokkolan Voima: electricity, district heating

THE FUTURE OF KOKKOLA

There's a strong belief in the future expansion of the Kokkola Industrial Park. Freeport Cobalt is expanding with new production lines for cobalt-based chemicals used in rechargeable batteries. The plant delivers its products to over 50 countries around the globe.

Boliden produces metals that make modern society work. One of the most important characteristics of zinc is its ability to protect steel from corrosions. The company is the largest industrial employer in Kokkola.

The raw  material used in the plant comes from Boliden's mines in the Nordic countries and Ireland, but to some extent also from other mining companies. In 2014 the company will expand its operations to include extraction of silver from zinc concentrate.

Autumn in Sotkamo 2015

10968923696?profile=originalIt's getting colder. We've been working in the garden and preparing the grounds for the upcoming winter. The news told us that it's been snowing in Lapland. We might get the first snow within days or weeks. One never knows but the 15'th October is a good guess.

The weather has been extra ordinary warm this year. The picture was taken a week ago and it was still 20 C.

Horses pull a two wheeled cart
If it breaks you will depart

Place a bet before it starts
Good wager wins if played smart

Riders ready at the gate
Fans no longer have to wait

Athlete sport with high speed
Is a skill you surely need

At times a horse can fall down
Sad to see that come around

Last turn has crowd in a roar
We wait to hear close end score
