The future of Sawmills

Finnish forest industry is in the middle of a radical change (2011)..

Deepening recession and the falling demand of woodworking industry´s traditional products have forced also sawmilling industry to find new and more fertile solutions to improve their operational preconditions.

In recent years, the role of bioenergy production has often been highlighted as a part of sawmills´ business repertoire.

Sawmilling produces naturally a lot of by-products (e.g. bark, sawdust, chips) which could be exploited more effectively in energy production, and this would bring more incomes or maybe even create new business opportunities for sawmills.

Production of bioenergy is also supported by government´s climate and energy policies favouring renewable energy sources, public financial subsidies, and soaring prices of fossil fuels.

Also the decreasing production of domestic pulp and paper industry releases a fair amount of sawmills´ by-products for other uses.

Ryanair is very competitive

Imagine that this information board would be a touch screen with some additional content available by changing the frame or one of the segments. 10968912470?profile=originalPicture: Helge V. Keitel, KK-Net, Sotkamo, Finland

Ryanair makes money throug dramatically increased efficieny. Flying isn't a luxury experience anymore. Rayanair allows travellers to spend their hard earned euros on the ground. I do like the idea.

What I rellay wanted to ask Jouko was whether he had brought the newspaper with the article written by Svetlana.10968912080?profile=original

No problem, the artcile is also available at Helsinki Times - News from Finland.

This is an interesting coincidence, while we're negotiating to close a deal about a Clenatec CRM project where we need bloggers and social media activists to cover the Russian market.

I hope to be able to get a contract in August or September 2013. We're also thinking about other possibilities in the same line. I'll write more about that in my coming postings.

Svetlana Huusko writes: "My first visit to Finland was in 2005 when my family and I went on vacation to a Spa-Hotel and my first impression of the country was very positive. It was quiet and peaceful, and people were not in a hurry. There were many ways to relax here and the nature was insanely beautiful. Since then, I have visited Finland quite a few times for shopping, leisure and cultural attractions but I never thought about living here or marrying a Finnish man. I’m originally from St. Petersburg, so it was easy for me to visit Finland and enjoy all the pleasures."

The problem owner as a potential client

The man walked to the window and gazed out. The paper mill, power plant, water and waste treatment units were there. They would be there for some years or decades to come.

Looking at the prospects, the networker had to make a fundamental choice from which many other decision in his professional life would follow. And that choice was simple.

His contact was looking for measurement and process specialists, problem identifiers, programmers and productivity enhancers motivated to operate as local problems solvers.

He had to figure out logical answers to these questions:

  • Do you want to do good and do well?
  • Do you want to make money and make the world a better place?
  • Do you want your kids to live in a safe and sustainable environment?
  • Do you want to become a good and respected problem solver?

The show must go on

10968910462?profile=originalBack in school, we used to talk about working together. After all this time, we are, now.

Kind of funny. They all walked over to the boardroom TV and saw what the environmental consultant mentioned.

On the screen, we were pushing through a crowd of TV cameras and microphones as reporters shouted questions.

The response: "No comments!"

The rest of the meeting passed quietly. The energy consultants occupied themselves behind their computers. We were talking about alternative CHP solutions for small scale power plants.

A lot of talk, but very little sustainable, long-term solutions. Sad, there was a demand. The technology evolution was slower than expected.

DALLAS

White people never drew into the neighborhoods and mean streets of South Dallas, into the "other Dallas" fo crime and crack cocaine, prostitution and proverty, drive-by shootings and gang-bangers.

I'll tell more details in my next postings.

Ericsson, Nokia, Apple, Samsung

Once upon a time, Nokia was the world's largest mobile phone maker. Nokia was number one with a huge margin compared to anyone else. There was a time when the Swedish Ericsson appeard as an important competitor.

Today, Nokia is just another smart phones producer. It will take a long time for the global leader to climb back to its historical might. This  will take a lot of time or it never happens.

Motorla and Blackberry are almost history. What kind of lessons can we learn from this?

Funding for Lending

10968918457?profile=originalThe Spanish prime minister, Mariano Rajoy, has called on the European Central Bank to create a program to provide cheap funding to small businesses, an initiative that has been empolyeed outside the euro zone to get credit flowing again.

Small firms in Spain are paying higher rates for financing  than their counterparts in Northern Europe, the result of a property bust and prolonged recession in that country.

Though credit conditions helped push a record number of Spanish firms into bankruptcy in the first quarter of 2013.
